ADHD Assessments

Starting December 1st, 2025, the Specialist GPs at QSMC are pleased to offer comprehensive Adult ADHD assessments in line with the latest Queensland legislative changes and Australian evidence-based guidelines.

These appointments provide a supportive environment for patients to explore the possibility of an ADHD diagnosis and, if appropriate, begin treatment under the care of Specialist GPs with advanced training in ADHD management—without the need for a psychiatrist referral.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What can I expect in my first appointment?

The initial workup for ADHD requires a comprehensive medical and psychiatric history to be taken. This allows your practitioner to understand the issues affecting you now and how to best address them. Sometimes a diagnostic tool or questionnaire is used to assist in reaching a potential diagnosis. This process typically takes about an hour.

Why do I need follow-up appointments?

ADHD is considered a lifelong condition, so your practitioner will attempt to establish a pattern of symptoms over your lifetime. This may include interviews with siblings or parents, where appropriate, or seeking school reports which may provide insight into symptoms in your childhood. The process in some cases may require 3-4 appointments before a diagnosis is reached.

When will I receive a diagnosis?

Receiving a diagnosis of ADHD is not guaranteed during assessment. There are several other diagnoses that can have similar and overlapping symptoms. Your practitioner will suggest treatment strategies that are best tailored to your needs.

What is involved with treatment?

If a diagnosis is reached, there are several treatment modalities we can recommend, not all of which involve medication. If medication is recommended, your practitioner will perform a brief cardiovascular workup including an ECG to rule out any risks associated with this therapy. You are always welcome to discuss any treatment preferences with your practitioner.

Is there any ongoing follow up?

Yes, there is usually follow up every 6 months at a minimum to assess response to treatment and make changes to therapy if needed. This follow up may be more frequent in the initial stages of treatment.
